Motor Vehicle Excise Abatements

Download: Application for Motor Vehicle Excise Abatement

You may be entitled to an abatement on your motor vehicle excise tax for the following reasons:

  • The vehicle was stolen;
  • The vehicle was sold and the registration was properly cancelled;
  • You moved out of town;
  • The vehicle was overvalued. (Note: The excise is not based on the actual purchase price or “book value” of the vehicle. Read about the computation formula here.)

If you think that you are entitled to an adjustment on your excise bill, it is strongly recommended that you pay the bill in full, then contact the Assessors about an abatement. Although payment of a bill is not a precondition for an abatement, you risk incurring late fees and penalties if an abatement is not granted. A refund will follow if the abatement is granted.
