About Washington

Map showing location of Washington within Berkshire CountyThe Town of Washington is located in central Berkshire County. We are bordered by Pittsfield, Dalton, Hinsdale, Peru, Middlefield, Becket, Lee, and Lenox.

The geographic area of Washington is approximately 38.8 square miles, nearly two thirds of which is in conservation. The entire western half of the Town consists of October Mountain State Forest and Pittsfield Watershed lands. The headwaters of the East Branch of the Housatonic River flow out of Muddy Pond in Washington.

According to 2020 U.S. Census Bureau information, the population of Washington is 494 (down 8% from the 2010 count of 538) with 248 total households. The median age in Town is now 61 (up from 49 in 2010).

In the State legislature, we are part of the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin, and Hampden State Senate district and the 4th Berkshire State House district.

In the U.S. Congress, we are part of Massachusetts’ 1st congressional district.
