Highway Department

The Washington Highway Department generally serves as the Town’s overall Department of Public Works, attending to more than just our roads.

The Highway crew maintains and repairs our roads, bridges, and culverts during the summer. They take care of roadside brush and trees, and they mow the lawns at Town Park, Town buildings, and our cemeteries. In winter, the Highway crew’s primary responsibility is keeping roads plowed, sanded, and salted.

They remain on-call all hours of the day and night for emergencies during heavy wind, rain, ice, and snow storms to keep roads open and assist emergency responders and utility crews.

Throughout the year, the Highway Dept. performs routine maintenance and repair on all our equipment and vehicles, including the Voc. Ed. school bus. They provide all manner of maintenance support services for the Transfer Station as well as Town building operations.
