Town Meetings

Washington practices the Town Meeting style of government, which still closely resembles the self-governing vision of our country’s Founding Fathers.

The Town Meeting is more than a gathering; it is the legislative body and appropriating authority of the Town. Every resident registered to vote is a member of Town Meeting. The appropriations of the annual budget, authorizations for borrowing, changes to bylaws, and other such matters must all be approved by Town Meeting.

The Annual Town Meeting is held in May on the Wednesday ten days before the Annual Town Election (which usually, but not always, works out to be the second Wednesday). Special Town Meetings are held as needed and called for by the Select Board.

2024 Annual Town Meeting
The 2024 Annual Town Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024

A voter registration session will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am and 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Washington Town Hall.  This is the deadline to register to vote in the 2024 Annual Town Meeting if you are not yet registered.
