Tax Collector

The Tax Collector is responsible for the billing and collection of all real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle taxes, as determined and committed by the Board of Assessors.

Paying Your Taxes

Payments can be made as follows:

  • By check: made out to the Town of Washington and mailed to Town of Washington Tax Collector, 8 Summit Hill Rd, Washington, MA 01223;
  • We have a drop box in front of the Town Hall for check payments only;
  • Payments and inquiries can be made online through our Tax Payment portal.

The online inquiry and bill payment uses the existing Unipay payment processing, but offers many new improvements for obtaining all of your billing information. You can view past or present bills, print reports for IRS income tax filing, and make payments. Bills can be found by entering your last name, a space, and the first few letters of your first name. You can also follow the formatting instructions for other search criteria by clicking on “example here” when you enter the system.

Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes

Town of Washington Tax Rate for FY2024: $15.31

The Town has a semi-annual billing system.

  • First Half due November 1st, or 30 days after mailing (covers from July 1 through December 31)
  • Second Half due May 1st (covers from January 1 through June 30)

Note: If payment due date falls on a weekend, the due date will move to the first Monday after the due date.

All bills are due thirty (30) days from issue date or from date of the mailing, whichever is later. After that time has elapsed, interest is calculated and a demand charge is place on the unpaid bill. A Demand Bill is then mailed to the taxpayer. That bill is due and payable within fourteen (14) days.

If the bill still remains unpaid, appropriate action will then be taken to facilitate collection. In the case of unpaid Real Estate taxes, a Tax Title taking may be initiated, which will place a lien on the property. In cases of extreme delinquency, if the Tax Title lien is not settled, the property may be foreclosed upon by the Town.

Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes

Motor Vehicle Excise taxes are determined by the Registry of Motor Vehicles and reported to the Town for collection. Motor Vehicle Excise tax bills are sent throughout the year. Excise tax bills are due within 30 days from the date of issue. Failure to pay excise tax could lead to non-renewal of the taxpayer’s driver’s license.

After 30 days a demand fee and other charges will be added to the original excise due, and the collection will be turned over to the Deputy Collector. At that point, payments must be made with his office and cannot be paid to the Washington Tax Collector.

The Deputy Collector for motor vehicle excise bills for the Town of Washington is Arthur P. Jones & Associates, 98 Cottage Street, Easthampton, MA 01027; Phone: (413) 527-2388.

Warranted excise bills may be paid via mail or online with bill information.
