Grass Roots Cemetery Restoration Project, 6/24

Join neighbors at the Old Town Hall Cemetery on Saturday, June 24, 9–11:00 am to help bring this historic landmark back to life.

Over the past two years, a group of residents have been working on cleaning, mending, and straightening stones in this beautiful historic site where founding Washingtonians are buried. What a difference it has made!

The project is a fun way to meet neighbors you may not know, and you’ll learn more about those who lived in this town all the way back to the 1700s.

We use the recommended product, D2, to clean stones. It’s easy, and so satisfying to see the transformation of a lichen-covered stone to a clean stone on which the letters and decorative carving can be seen. Bring a lawn chair if you’d like to sit for the project.

Those looking for a more vigorous workout can help straighten stones. Bring a shovel if you’d like to try your hand at it (although there will be a few extra shovels available if you forget). The stones are heavy, but with several people at it, we always get the job done. Our team is getting to be as smart about moving stones as the Egyptians who made the pyramids!

All of the supplies are provided, though you’ll want to bring garden gloves. There’s no experience required.
