Tree Removal Firewood Availability Policy and Sign-up

When taking down trees along the road right of way, limbs and branches will be chipped either into nearby woods where feasible or be hauled away. Larger limbs and trunks will need to be disposed of.

The Highway Dept will make a reasonable effort to contact the abutting property owner to offer first right of refusal. If the property owner wishes to have the wood, the Highway crew will leave it more or less where it falls and it will become the responsibility of the property owner.

If the wood is to be removed, the Highway Dept will deliver the rough lengths to interested residents from a sign-up list. The list will be first-come, first-served; a single load each. When the end of the list is reached, we will start over. The Highway Dept will make a reasonable effort to contact the next person on the list in advance of the planned cutting. If there is not a timely response and an arrangement made, then they will skip to the next person and try again next time.

Residents receiving wood will be responsible to mark out a location large enough and firm enough for the highway truck to access without sinking in order to dump a load of logs. The crew will take reasonable care, but the Town will not be responsible for ruts and damage to yards from dumping the wood.

The Highway Dept can make no guarantee of the quantity, lengths or diameter of the wood delivered. Some logs may be 36” diameter or larger. The species of wood will vary according to what needs to be removed and cannot be guaranteed. Current cutting plans are targeting a majority ash, but there will be other types. The crew will make every effort to limit any pine or poplar to no more than one or two lengths per load. The entire load will be delivered and become the resident’s responsibility. We cannot accommodate picking & choosing or returns.
